Q: Configuration question for photo storage on a network
Hi everyone, I'm looking for suggestions to help me create backup copies and share photos. I have a specific configuration at home which makes this a bit trickier than I can solve!
Existing stuff
A - Wifi network with a typical domestic modem/router for internet connectivity (supplied by my ISP - Virgin Media, UK)
B - two iMacs and one Macbook, all recent models with recent MacOS versions, happily connected to the wifi network
C - ethernet cabling that connects all three Macs to a Netgear GS205 switch
For practical reasons I can't connect the Macs or the Netgear switch physically to the Internet router.
I tried a Synology NAS connected to the Netgear switch, but that has proved to be very unreliable and has me pulling out my hair - I just find their software and terminology incredibly difficult; no doubt my fault!
What I am trying to achieve:
1 - A time machine backup solution for all three Macs
2 - A way to synchronise specific folders on each of the Macs; these hold RAW images and files created by the image processing software I use (Capture One and DxO). The idea is to have a copy of these folders on both iMacs and on the backup device
3 - A way to make available to iOS devices a second set of folders that hold JPG images only. The idea is to have these on all three Macs, and on demand on a number of iOS devices.
I'd love some practical suggestions on how to make this work!
Thanks
Jan-Peter
