Ipod crashes when plugged in to 2016 Subaru Imprezza

I recently got a new car (after 13 years, go me!) and I was so excited to be able to sync my old Ipod Classic 120G with my care and get everything clear and clean. However, if I play music on shuffle it will after a while freeze up where I need to reboot. It tends to work better with podcast and audio books. Anyone know if there is something that can be done to avoid the freeze/crash?
