Upgrade problems

I recently upgraded my iMac early 2009 2.66 ghz intel core 2 duo with 4 gb memory from Yosemite to El Capitan. Have had many problems with it acting weirdly, but mainly opening apps takes forever. I have run disk first aid and it says it was corrupted and fixed the hard disk but the problems still continued and when I ran disk first aid several times again it said the same thing but never actually fixed it. Should I go back to my backups and reinstall Yosemite or is there any other solution that someone could recommend?

That sounds like your hard drive is failing. You can try to restore Yosemite from your backups, but you may experience the same issues.

4GB of RAM with a spinning hard drive is very much the minimum limit to run El Capitan along with anything else.

You also just may have some incompatible software installed that is causing the problems.

If Disk Utility cannot repair the drive it will usually say so. What were the errors from Disk Utility? If the drive cannot be repaired, then you have two options:

Get Disk Warrior for $99.00 that may be able to repair the errors Disk Utility cannot repair.
Backup your files, reformat the drive, and reinstall OS X.

Install El Capitan from Scratch

Backup if possible before continuing.

Restart the computer. Immediately after the chime hold down the Command and Rkeys until the Apple logo appears. When the Utility Menu appears:

Select Disk Utility from the Utility Menu and click on Continue button.

When Disk Utility loads select the volume (indented entry, usually Macintosh HD) from the Device list.

Click on the Erase icon in Disk Utility's main window. A panel will drop down.

Set the Format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)

Click on the Apply button, then wait for the Done button to activate and click on it.

Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu.

Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
