Upgrade from old MacBook

What is modern version of the13" MacBook (early 2008)? I'm in the market for a new laptop, my MacBook doesn't have enough memory and cannot have a higher OS to use programs I want to use. I'm not looking for fabulous, I'm looking for functional. Suggestions for new laptops?

Please answer the following so someone can better help you considering your particular needs:

What software is used and work do your typically do with your laptop?
What devices do you need to connect to it (printer, scanner, external monitor, external hard drives, flash drives)?
How much hard drive storage do you need in a new laptop?

If your current MacBook is somewhat meeting your needs, then I'm guessing that a new MacBook Air will easily meet you needs but want to make sure. The new MacBook may also be an option.
