Pairing problems

My watch frequently disconnects.

When that happens Pairing does not work. Nothing happens. I focus the camera on the watch and zilch

Same with manually, my watch does not show up on iPhone 6s Plus

Eventually, always at home, I connect it by swiping the screen.

It's driving me nuts. This is a recent problem. It worked fine for months.

Hi

It is not normally necessary to re-pair your watch when it becomes disconnected from your iPhone.

If your watch does become disconnected from your iPhone via Bluetooth, it will attempt to connect with a known Wi-Fi network as a fallback.

To check the connection status of your watch at any time, go to the Settings Glance:

  • When viewing the time on your watch, swipe up on the display, then swipe left / right to the Settings Glance.
  • This will state either Connected or Disconnected:
    • If it states Connected and the icon at the upper-right corner is a green phone, then your watch is connected to your iPhone via Bluetooth.
    • If it states Connected and the icon is a green cloud, then your watch is disconnected from your iPhone via Bluetooth, but has instead connected (as a fallback) to a known Wi-Fi network.
    • If it states Disconnected, your watch is disconnected from your iPhone and also is not connected to a Wi-Fi network. The icon at the upper-right corner will be a red phone with a line through it.

Under these circumstances, the same Disconnected icon will also be shown at the top of your watch face:

Swipe down again to return to the watch face.

Bluetooth range is around 33 feet / 10 meters. The actual range will vary in practice, but you do not necessarily need to have your iPhone on or immediately around you for the watch to maintain the Bluetooth connection.

Disconnections can be normal, happening whenever the watch loses the Bluetooth connection with the paired iPhone and no known W-Fi network is available.

Note that there is a difference between your devices being "unpaired" vs them becoming temporarily "disconnected". Once they have been paired, your watch and iPhone will remain paired until they are manually unpaired. However, they can become disconnected or connected (multiple times) whilst still remaining paired.

Whenever they become disconnected, your watch and iPhone should reconnect automatically a short while after becoming available and/or being brought close together again.

If they do not, keep your iPhone and watch close by each other and follow these steps until they do:

  • Check that both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are enabled on your iPhone:
    • It may help to toggle Bluetooth off and on again on your iPhone (Settings > Bluetooth).
    • For the best performance from your watch during general daily wear, keep both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi permanently enabled on your iPhone.
  • Check that Airplane Mode is not enabled on your watch:
    • When viewing the time on your watch, swipe up on the watch face > swipe left / right to the Settings Glance.
    • If your watch is not connected and Airplane Mode is turned on, tap the button to turn it off.
    • It may otherwise help to toggle Airplane Mode on and off again.
  • Restart both devices, turning both off together, then restarting your iPhone first.

If they still do not reconnect, only then should you move on to unpairing and re-pairing your watch (choose to Restore from Backup if offered the option):

You may also wish to unpair and re-pair your watch if you believe that they are disconnecting more frequently than they should be.

If you have not yet done so, it may help to update both your iPhone and watch to the latest software, starting with your iPhone:

Thank you Jonathan

This clarified everything.

I was connecting by WiFi at home and didn't realize it.

It would have been helpful if Apple had shown that WiFi Connected screen on this Help page

I still could get nothing to work, not even Bluetooth on the Watch, and decided to restore my newly replaced iPhon6s Plus to factory settings.

No luck. Watch found Bluetooth but it isn't Paired Tried to unpair. But the Watch icon on the phone twill only tell me to Pair and the My Watch link does nothing. Manual doesn't show the watch on the iphone

What next? Call Apple?

You're welcome.

Your watch may not yet be unpaired. Follow these steps:

On your watch, go to: Home screen (via a single press on the Digital Crown) > Settings (cog icon) > General > Reset > Erase all Content and Settings.

Then pair it to your iPhone again via the standard set up process (you may be offered the option to Restore from Backup, if your iPhone was restored from a backup):

To clarify for future reference:

To check whether your watch is connected to your iPhone via Bluetooth, do not go to the Home screen > Settings > Bluetooth on your watch. This is how to tell the watch to search for and pair with additional Bluetooth devices (eg a headset). It is normal for the paired iPhone not to be listed there and for the screen to report "searching".

Instead, go to the Settings Glance, as described in my earlier reply.
