Q: Epson Scan Software Now Crashing

2 Days ago the Epson Scan application started crashing immediately on opening.  I spent literally 3 hours online with Epson.  In the process I uninstalled and reinstalled the entire Epson folder, cleaned out and reloaded preference and library files but still get the same result.  I tried setting up a new user on the computer and initially on that new user account I could open the software but the second time I tried it crashed immediately on opening.  I'm assuming I have a conflict with some other application or something in the OS but I'm at a loss at this point.  This is an application that my wife uses frequently so any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Greetings sawatchboy,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

Based on your post, I see that your Epson scan application started crashing immediately when opening. You've spoken with Epson, and tested this issue in a new user account, and you are still having an issue. I can definitely understand how important it is that you are able to use your scanning software. I'm happy to assist you in resolving this issue.

You mentioned a possible conflict with another application. I would recommend starting your computer into safe mode, and then testing to see if you get the same result with the Epson app crashing. Safe mode (sometimes called safe boot) is a way to start up your Mac so that it performs certain checks, and prevents some software from automatically loading or opening.

Use OS X El Capitan: Start up in safe mode, specifically, this section:

Starting up in safe mode may help you diagnose problems you’re having with your Mac.

Important:    To print these instructions, click the Share button  in the Help window, then choose Print.

    1. Choose Apple menu > Shut Down.

    2. After your Mac shuts down, wait 10 seconds, then press the power button.

    3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold down the Shift key.

You should press the Shift key as soon as possible after you hear the startup tone, but not before.

    4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple logo and progress indicator.

To leave safe mode, restart your Mac again, but don’t hold down any keys during startup.

If you notice that you aren't having an issue in safe mode, take a look at the section 'If an issue doesn't happen in safe mode' from the article below.

Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up

    Best Regards.

Sorry it took so long for me to reply.  I've been out of town then starting a new job.  Today was the first time I could run the "Safe Mode" test.  I booted the computer in Safe Mode and got the same result.  When I tried to open the Epson Scan software it immediately crashed.  I tried a number of times with the same result.

    Thanks,

    Jim

    Hi Jim

Try using Image Capture in your Applications folder.

Mac Basics: Using a scanner - Apple Support

I've used Image Capture for years with all of my Epson's, instead of the Epson scanware.

I bought a new Epson scanner about two months ago. A recent Epson update, 3.2 as I recall, installed something called Epson Scanner Monitor. It was using over a GB of RAM in my MacBook Pro running OS10.11.6. Fortunately I had upgraded it to 8GB RAM so the effects were not too bad, but would have taxed the original 4GB RAM.

I found it in Macintosh HD > Library > Application Support > EPSON > Scanner. I deleted it because, as the wise den.thed has recommended, I've only used Image Capture for several years for all scanning scanning after the scan software for an older printer (different brand) failed to work after an update.
