I remember that, to check if an iPhone is backed up to iCloud, I went to Settings > iCloud and there was a dialog box at the bottom "Back up now, last backup (date or hour)".
I cannot see it now (iOS 9.3.5)

Go to settings - iCloud down to backup click on last backup
If its an old backup click backup now .
It should be backed up automatically when its locked and on charge over your WiFi .

Thanks for your answers: so in Summary:
Settings > iCloud > storage > manage storage > choose device, in this case the iPhone, then you'll see Last Backup: yesterday (or whatever)
