Q: No partition possible for reinstallation of El Capitan

I have major problems on both OS X and win 7 (imac 2009).

The computer is unusable, especially the keyboard. This follows an update to El Capitan a couple of weeks ago.

The computer does not boot with any keys (keyboard problems), the only start up disk available is bootcamp, but OS X and recovery disks are visible on win 7 in bootcamp console.

I tried reinstalling El Capitan but no disks are available for partition, so i'm blocked (needs to be GUID which I don't have).

I have saved all files and would really like to restore systems. However, the dvd is not working (ejects) for both OSX installation DVD or win 7 iso burnt dvd.

I'm wondering if the this is repairable ? Thanks in adavnce for any advice.

Is this an Apple Keyboard? Did the problems right after the upgrade, or a few days later.

If Alt/Option keys do not work during boot up, does Command+R or Command+Opt+R work? If is it an Apple keyboard, have you run a SMC and NVRAM Reset.

Do you have a Time Machine backup? Was your Optical drive working properly prior yo the El Capitan upgrade?

    Thanks for the reply.

It is an apple keyboard (I have two, both USB and wireless which both react the same way). They work for a few touches after restarting and then become unusable, opening other files like shortcuts if you see what I mean. I've been using the on screen keyboard to avoid problems.

Neither Alt, command + R or command + opt + R work when restarting to boot.

No I have not tried SMC and NVRAM Reset, what is that ?

No Time machine back-up I'm afraid. The optical drive is very selective (never use it much so I only noticed recently), it ejects OSX installation and win dvd's, so I tried the Paragon NTFS dvd which works fine.

Is this both on OS X and Windows, or just one OS, but not both?

Can you play Audio CDs and Video DVDs? You may want to create an OS X backup using TM and a Windows backup on a separate disk, in case you need to recover files and/or OS.

Keyboard problems the same on OS and windows, apple keyboard.

I've done the SMC reset, thank you.

Tried the NVRAM twice, but nothing happened.

I can play audio CD's and DVD's, no problem.

I have recovered all my files on an external disk already. I'll do it again on TM for OS backup also.

    Thanks

I need to leave for a business trip, back in a few days.

I'll bump the thread and hopefully I can find a solution before buying a new computer.

Thanks once again for the helpful advice.

Insert a DVD or CD and from OS X Terminal, please post the output of

    drutil list

drutil tray eject (should eject the inserted media)

The following command will produce significant output, but is useful.

    drutil getconfig

    Your Optical drive looks clean.

However, the dvd is not working (ejects) for both OSX installation DVD or win 7 iso burnt dvd.

Where did these specific DVDs come from? Is the OS X DVD a commercial one or a burnt one? What type of media/brand was used?

i have all the commercial dvd's bought with the iMac in 2009:

    os x install 10.6.1

    applications install

    windows 7

parangon ntfs mac os x7 (this is the only disk that is not ejected among these 4)

What do you mean by media/brand

If you have El Capitan, the OS X 10.6 DVD will be rejected by the installer.

Is it also rejected by the Mac when you use the Alt/Option key. Do not insert the 10.6 DVD when booted in El Capitan, but shutdown your Mac, power it back up and hold Alt/Option. Once you have Boot Manager running, now insert the DVD and check if it shows up in Boot Manager.

We can tackle the W7 once this is sorted.

Does the 10.6 DVD show up in the boot menu? If there are EFI updates on your Mac, you will run into such issues. Under El Capitan, look at System Report -> Hardware and post the SMC and EFI firmware versions.

Do you have a Recovery HD on your internal disk? From OSX Treminal, please post the output of

i have a recovery HD on desktop but i don't know how to link that with osX terminal.

Sorry for lack of question marks or other punctuations etc. My keyboard bugs badly, this is the virtual keyboard when it wants to work, all of this is very tedious because of an update to El Capitan which i deeply regret. Can i simply uninstall El Capitan...THANKS
