Every time I plug in my iPod 5G I get a message to upload the new OSX 9.3.5 version. However half way through the download, I get an error message stating that there's a network problem and the update can't be installed.

Perhaps the download servers to get the update are busy.
Another time, maybe a day or two, until then you can also read
about other users experience who may already have new update.
{Depending on your iDevice, and its build version, you may need
to read about if the update will work. Some older models cannot
use a latest iOS system update. -- Yours should be capable.}
So to try again at another time, may find the download available.
