Keychain "login" cannot found

At regular intervals a pop up window tells me

Keychain "login" cannot be found to store "Safari"

I am given two options - "Cancel" or "Reset to Default"

So far I have tried to operate by cancelling the window.

Should I reset? What happens with reset?

I am using an iMac running OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)

Barney,

As you may have guessed I am pretty much lost at the moment.

How do I delete the login keychain and create a new one? When I open the application "keychain access" the login tab is not a padlock it appears as square dotted outline. Nothing happens if I try to click on it.

I have never had a login password for the computer. When requested I just pressed return ( ie a blank password)

Is there any hope?

Use Go To Folder in Finder to go to this folder:

~/Library/Keychains

Look for a file called login.keychain and also login.keychain-db.

Move them to the Trash.

Launch Keychain Access and create a new login keychain. You can actually name it anything you like.

Set that new keychain as the default. (File menu with the new keychain selected in the list).

You also may want to change the settings on the keychain--disable lock after x minutes of inactivity and lock when sleeping.

Barney,

I thought everything was okay but I am now being plagued by messages such as;

AppleIDAuthAgent wants to use the "new" keychain and

com.apple.iCloudHelper.xpc wants to use the "new" keychain

Each time I enter the password and things work normally until a new message.

I also note that my Mail program forgets the password each time I log out.

Is there a fix? Are these two issues related?
