Q: What happens to my iPad 2 after iOS 10 release?

We have multiple iPad 2 at my business. We have had to factory reset some of them when they run into problems. My question is, what happens when iOS 10 comes out? When we factory reset them, they reboot with iOS 6. If Apple stops signing iOS 9 after 10 is released, and our ipads cant update to 10 are they just stuck at 6?

iPad 2, iOS 9.3.4

If you have to restore the iPads, they will restore with the latest, compatible software, in this case 9.3.5.

When I've had to do a hard reset, they come back up with iOS 6. What happens when Apple stops signing iOS 9.3.5?

Doesnt iTunes check to see if the OS is signed before restoring a backup?

By a "hard reset" can we assume you are holding the Home button and the On/Off button for 10-20 seconds, until the Apple logo reappears? If so, this will not change. The restore process, will always upgrade the device to the most recent version.

Yes but if iOS 10 doesn't support iPad 2 and Apple stops signing iOS 9.3.5 a month after the release of iOS 10 (like they did with iOS 8 when 9 came out) what happens? I thought you couldn't update to a version of OS that wasn't signed by Apple

You can always upgrade to the newest, compatible version. iOS 9 will be available for devices that are not iOS 10 compatible.

Maybe I'm not understand you, if so I apologize. Apple will stop signing iOS 9 shortly after 10 comes out. I thought you couldn't update or restore to a version of iOS that wasn't signed by Apple. The first thing iTunes does when you try to restore an iPad is check with Apple servers to see if your OS is signed.

You will still be able to update to iOS 9.3.5 at any point.

Apple only stops signing a particular version of iOS for devices that can actually handle a newer version. For devices that cannot handle a newer version Apple will continue to sign the maximum iOS version the device can handle.

Beyond that, restoring an iPad does not in any way return it to any previous iOS version other than that one it is currently running when it is restored.

If your iPads are at something other than iOS 6, when restored they will keep that iOS version. They will not revert to iOS 6 at all.

It does not work that way, and never has.

If you have not updated past iOS 6, then restoring them will keep iOS 6 on them. If you restore through iTunes on a computer it will automatically update to the newest iOS version they can support which is iOS 9.3.5

They stop signing the version for devices that are capable of being updated further. If you have a device that is iOS 10 compatible, yes, you are correct, you will not be able to update to iOS 9 after the release of iOS 10. This doesn't apply to devices that can not be upgraded to iOS 10.

For instance, if you had an iPhone 4, with iOS 4, you could still update it to iOS 7.1.2 today.

iOS 9 will continue to be signed for devices that cannot be upgraded beyond that. iOS 5.5.1 is still being signed for Apple for the original iPad. iOS 7.1.2 is still being signed for the iPhone 4. You will be fine. Your iPads will continue to work. You will still be able to factory restore them as needed.

Thank you, I understand now. I didn't know "This doesn't apply to devices that can not be upgraded to iOS 10."

    Much appreciated stedman1
