I have to use a VPN for work and have found that I can not connect to apple music over the VPN no matter where I point it (city/country.) As soon as I turn off the VPN the service connects and works properly. Does anyone know if Apple Music has disabled usage through a VPN even if we are in the States and using a Stateside VPN?

As of macOS version 10.13 (17A405) iTune listening over VPN is working for me. I am using Private Internet Access (PIA) and listening to apply music on iTunes. I hope it stays this way. I don't believe this is hardware related because there is not a GPS receiver in the macBook Pro that I use, nonetheless, this is a no brainer for Apple to allow you to use Apple music over VPN. This isn't 2004 we got small children hacking at coffee shops now 🙂 come on Apple let us work and listen to our music without exposing ourselves to everyone in the coffee shop!
Scratch that.... I wrote the above before trying the Radio feature. I can listen to tracks but not the radio... o'well guess its back to Pandora for radio....darn you Apple ðŸ˜
I don't think any of us will really know the inner working of the Apple services to that detail. Even though you are in the USA and they can probably pick up on the VPN being in the USA they don't know you are actually using the VPN from inside the USA. That's the whole thing about VPNs, they hide your actual location.

That is fair but my login is from a US billing address and I am maintaining a US connection. Just doesn't make sense.
I have no idea if this is what is happening but if Apple has a way of saying, "Don't trust any connection coming from this IP address because it is a known VPN service and we don't know where the person really is," that could block you. Even if the server is in the USA I guess they could just block it since it could be a known method for people to try to use Apple's services from outside the USA which you are not allowed to do even with a US affiliated Apple ID.
I had the same issue and called to apple's technical support and they told me apple music won't work with vpn.
