The time limit is 14 days, you need to include all original packing and it can be returned to another Authorized Apple Store. See this document.

Whilst Apple's Standard Return Policy is 14 days, I suggest that you ask your preferred Apple Store in New York whether they would still be willing to allow you return the item for an exchange.
