remove all external devices
without knowing which mac you have you can run AHT or the disks that came with the computer at the time of purchase
Using Apple Hardware Test - Apple Support
if your device passes the prescribed HW tests reboot into safe mode with the external devices still disconnected.
if that is not possible you may try internet recovery in which case if you don't have a backup of your data you will loose it. If your can hard wire your Mac to your internet connection you may experience faster and more responsive download over wifi.

Thanks for the help! The AHT doesn't seem to work, it holds the grey screen longer than usual but just defaults to the login screen. This is a late 2011 MacBook Pro with low specs. I tried reinstalling OS X through Recovery but it says that "An error occured..."
