iMac ethernet issue

My late 09 iMac will connect to ethernet if it is connected to my Airport Extreme. If I connect the cable modem directly to the iMac, taking the Airport out of the equation, the iMac doesn't recognize the ethernet cable. I am trying to rule out some speed issues with the airport. Id like to connect directly to the cable modem but something isn't letting me.
