Q: photos

-How do I archive my photos outside of the application, as in file folders? I have lost photos that have gone unsupported by Apple -- iPhoto will not open and the apple download doesn't work. I want to permanently save my photos a on an SSD.

which version of Aperture do you have?  Aperture is the only Apple application I kow, that can merge Aperture libraries and iPhoto libraries, without losing the edited versions or the originals.  But the versions of iPhoto and Aperture need to match. All other tools will force you to decide between the edited versions or the originals. See this link:  Aperture 3.3: How to use Aperture to merge iPhoto libraries - Apple Support

 

But you need matching versions of Aperture and iPhoto, so update to iPhoto 9.6.1 and aperture 3.6 if you can. It may not be possible, if your versions are not AppStore versions.

 

. I can't tell what version of iPhoto I have since it is grayed out. I wanted to keep all photos in one large library, then create others as needed.

To find out  the versions of your applications, you can select the application in the Finder and use "File > Get Info" . In many cases, the info panel will show the version.

 

If the Info panel is not showing the version, use the -menu in the upper left corner of the main menu bar.

In the About panel click "System Report". In the System Report panel scroll down in the sidebar to "Software" and select "Applications". Wait for the list of all applications to appear and look for iPhoto and Aperture. The list will show the version numbers.

    Now to merge all my 500 plus libraries - will I have to chase down on which disk they are downloaded? or is there an easier way? Is there a safe way to delete these multipal backups?

     

    You'll have to find the libraries, then open each one in turn by double-clicking it to open it in iPhoto or Aperture and to upgrade it to the latest version. I'd rename each library you find and collect them in one place. Do you have a large, empty drive, where you can collect them? Copy them over to one place and rename them - perhaps add a running number. Then start merging with Aperture and move all libraries you merged into your destination library to a separate folder to get them out of the way.

    To search for all libraries systematically try the search in the Finder.

    • Open a Finder window and enter ⌘F to open the search window.
    • Type photolibrary into the search field and click "Serch: This Mac".
    • When you enter the search term you will see a drop-down menu. Click "Kind: Photo library".Screen Shot 2016-08-31 at 04.05.04GMT.png
    • This will give you a list of all iPhoto Libraries. When you click one of the libraries, you will see the path to the library at the bottom of the window.
    • Repeat the search with "aplibrary" to search for all Aperture Libraries.
