Q: My 2010 Macbook is running EXTREMELY slow.. ...help!?

It has been doing this more months now.... Most apps take 5+ minutes to open, some apps like Google Chrome won't even open anymore even with re-installation.  Safari always crashes, then takes 5+minutes to re-open, iTunes won't open anymore, and many others... Have tried Mac cleaning apps to try to find a problem but they never come up with anything... ready to chuck this macbook out the window :/  (applecare warranty is expired as well, so genius bar isn't an option)

Any ideas?

Run this analyzer and post the results here.

Using a "cleaning" application could be the reason it is doing it.

Chrome is reputed to be a resource hog. I'm guessing you have a too-full drive and/or too little RAM.

Remove any and all 3rd party utility, system utility and/or Anti-Virus as per the developers instructions on their webpage. Do not drag to trash, it does not uninstall these types of files.

    then boot into safe mode

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

    and reboot normally

if you are still experiencing issues you may post an etrecheck report for further analysis

What should my next step be? I don't have time machine so it doesn't let me delete anything.

    remove mac keeper immediately.

and remove your adware. while there are manual ways to do this the easy method is to download malwarebytes for mac

    www.malwarebytes.com

this product removes existing malware/adware it can identify, not protect you against getting more. you need to practice safe browsing.

also 2GB RAM to run 10.10 is simply not a realistic amount of Memory to allow the system to work.

the Macbook 2010 7,1 13" supports up to 16GB RAM

while Apples assessment of 2GB RAM has proven on these forums to be an underestimate it is IMHO that even 4GB RAM is insufficient to run the system without constant beach balling (I know because my 2010 iMac has the same OS and 4GB RAM and it struggles as a iTunes server)

It is recommended you upgrade to 8 or 16GB RAM

    https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_MacBook_MacBook_Pro/Upgrade/DDR3

many of us use and recommend Mac Sales OWC because they are knowledgable with Mac and stand by a solid project. I don't receive any compensation from them.

You have too little RAM, as others have mentioned.

You need to keep more free space on your boot drive. At least 20 GB at all times. Move files off onto other drives. You may need to re-house iTunes and Photos libraries on other drives.

Get rid of MacKeeper. Run Malwarebytes to check for other Malware. Also get rid of the adware.

Check for out of date extensions.

You need a backup system. You are getting close to your computer crashing with all this going on.  Stop buying coffees and invest $100 on a backup drive.  This is not the same drive as the one you will be buying for iTunes and Photos but will need to be large enough to backup all your things, including those on other drives.  This should be mandatory for anybody who owns a computer but the computer stores don't want to scare you away by telling you how much you really need to invest when buying a computer.
