Q: iPhone Upgrade Program

how do I buy an iPhone with the upgrade program. I have an iPhone 6s and I put the Serial Number and IMEI, it says I'm not legible. I tried to 'order' a new iPhone to see if there are options to get the upgrade program too, but there are no options. is there a limited time to get it like the apple care system(buy Apple care within 3 months).

iPhone Upgrade Program lets you upgrade to the next new model. Since iPhone 7 has not yet been released, there's nothing for you to upgrade to.

If you are starting the iPhone Upgrade Program for the first time, then you don't need to turn in your iPhone.

    http://www.apple.com/shop/buy-iphone/iphone6s

If your current iPhone was obtained with the iPhone Upgrade Program, you need to complete at least the equivalent of 12 payments before you can upgrade.

It will also be necessary for there to be a new iPhone to upgrade to. There is no newer iPhone to upgrade to at this point.

We, your fellow users, have no way of knowing, and Apple hasn't announced anything on this subject.

No, we know that iPhone 7 is coming but I'm asking about how do I get into the upgrade program

As I said, until Apple announces how the upgrade program will work for the iPhone 7 no one will know. Not me, not you, not any of the roughly 1 billion iPhone users.

ill rephrase my question, how do you enter the upgrading program, do you have a time limit on when you can buy it like with apple care?

There is no "entering" involved. Everything that there is that you can know is here: iPhone Trade-in - Apple

To enter the Upgrade Program you need to make the purchase through it. You can not enter the plan after purchasing the iPhone, as it would defeat the purpose.

    http://www.apple.com/shop/iphone/iphone-upgrade-program

Note the "Buy iPhone 6s" link at the top of the previous link.  Once a new iPhone is released that link will very likely change to reflect that.

To start the upgrade program you need to go through the motions in that link. Or Go to a physical Apple Store and request the purchase be done in the program.

Your Credit rating will be reviewed before you can access the program.

Upon checkout you can select the payment method and enter into the iPhone Upgrade Plan.

Do I need to specifically choose a carrier for the iPhone Upgrade Program (first timer here)?

Currently I use a 6s Plus and looking to upgrade to the new 7 Plus.

So the iPhone 7 coming out this weekend lists some iPhone 7's at various Apple stores but the model I want (7 Plus) is only available with a carrier I DO NOT USE.

If I order under the Upgrade Program and reserve a phone with a different carrier then show up at the Apple store to pick up, can I just swap out the SIM card with my carrier ?

Apple says the phones are not locked but why would I need to specify a carrier when I order online for pickup at the Apple store  ???

Or is the phone locked to the carrier that it is ordered for the first 12 months ???

The iPhone is not locked when obtained through the Upgrade Program. Choosing a carrier is simply a formality, but must be done since there is no Sim-Free option at this time.

The iPhone will be able to be used with any compatible GSM carrier.

The easiest thing to do is to choose AT&T as your carrier then pick the Upgrade Program option.

Picking T-Mobile does not appear to offer the upgrade program option.

    Thanks Phil!

That helped a lot - I just reserved the 7+ on AT&T carrier and now have a reservation for pick on the 16th at the Apple Store.

I am going to have my T Mobile nano SIM from my 6s ready to plop into the phone and be ready to go fishing without worrying about getting wet!

I just hope that at the Apple Store, the Citizen's Bank will approve me for the upgrade plan.

If not, I have some credit cards - whew!
