Q: Uninstall and reinstall iWork with El Capitan?

So currently I'm using a macbook pro from early 2011. The computer was a hand-me-down, so the current version of iWork was installed with the previous user's Apple ID and password. Now I can't update iWork without his Apple ID and password, which makes iWork incompatible with my mobile devices.

I've tried moving iWork to trash and reinstalling it through the app store, but it doesn't seem to register with the app store and instead of letting me purchase it and download it anew, it wants to update it with the previous user's Apple ID still.

How can I update iWork? Is there a way to do it without purchasing it again? If not, how can I uninstall my current version so the App Store will let me purchase it?

I'm not sure if the current version of iWork was installed with a disc or not. It appears to have been updated in 2014 the last time, before I got the computer.

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.1)

    Hello MaddieLoo,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities!

It sounds like you want to install the latest components of the iWork apps to be able to use them with your computer.  I will do my best to help you out with this.

To start with, there are some things that should be done whenever you receive a computer that has been used to ensure that all the previous user's information is removed.  You may want to consider doing this so that you do not run into this issue in the future.

What to do before selling or giving away your Mac

Another option would be to access the current iWork programs (Pages, Numbers, Keynote) from iCloud.com.  Sign in with your Apple ID and you should have access to all of these.

To remove the iWork programs installed, look in your application folder and drag all of the Pages, Numbers, Keynote applications either under iWork or by themselves to the trash, then empty the trash.  You can also use the spotlight in the upper right corner to search for any of these applications that might have ended up in another folder somehow.  Be sure to empty the trash.

You should then be able to go to the App Store to purchase the newest versions of each of these programs.  Be sure you are signed into the App Store with your Apple ID so that the programs become registered to you.  You can check that you are signed in correctly by opening the App Store, go to the top of the screen, click on Store.  If you look at View My Account, your Apple ID should be listed there.  If Apple ID is listed there, then select Sign Out, then Sign In and enter your Apple ID and password.

Take care, and thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities.
