how to format an external drive

I have a Seagate 0.5Tb drive and I want to format it using an iMac. It was previously connected to a PC and is probably set up with FAT16 or FAT32. When I select a folder on the drive, working in 'Finder', I find I cannot delete it so I have no way of making space.
