Q: I got a JS/Redirector .dg Trojan through firefox developer edition and Mcafee says it has been cleaned. What is it, and is it really completely gone?

Hi,

Could someone please help me with my query? It's a bit lengthy

I've got a MacBook Pro, my McAfee anti-virus recently discovered a JS/Redirector.dg Trojan which came through my Firefox Developer Edition. It says that it has been cleaned. I'm pretty sure it came through a series website that I use called Couchtuner2. I was opening a video player which forced popup windows to appear, which normally happens, so I closed them down as per usual, then about 40 seconds later I was alerted by my McAfee that it had found a threat in one of the Firefox folders and had cleaned it.

I ran a full system scan with McAfee, which found that everything was clean.

I ran another scan with Malwarebytes several times, which also found nothing.

This is my first macbook so I'm not really familiar with... well, anything mac related

Questions:

What is JS/Redirector.dg Trojan, and how dangerous is it?

I have found no information on the ".dg" variant of the JS/Redirector, have you heard about it?

Did McAfee really completely get rid of the JS/Redirector.dg Trojan threat?

If there was a threat would Malwarebytes discover it?

Could a threat be hidden somewhere?

Is my mac truly clean of this particular threat?

Should I uninstall my Firefox Developer Edition and reinstall it?

how do you do a complete application uninstall?

Thank you very much

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), null

Amazing things happen when you simply let a Mac work the way Apple designed it to work.

    Hi,

Something is wrong, when I was trying to uninstall the McAfee I noticed that it kept failing to launch and the Icon has disappeared from my taskbar, so I went to my applications and launched the uninstaller from there, it says that is uninstalled successfully, so I restarted the mac and did a etrecheck scan, but I can still see it there and the application has not gone away from my dock.

Apparently it did not, a typical characteristic of garbage software, and now all "McAfee" is doing for you is crashing.

It's generally a bad idea to attempt uninstalling apps piecemeal since they can cause this exact problem. On the other hand uninstallers that work reliably are rare among such ill-conceived trash, which is the reason I do not install them to begin with. Why would I trust something whose alleged purpose is to protect a Mac from threats both real and imagined, when its developer is so incompetent it can't even provide a way to uninstall its own software?

Since it appears you do not have a Time Machine backup to use, you may have no choice but to remove all its components manually. Before you do that I recommend contacting its developer for instructions, but if you are willing to attempt such removals piecemeal I suggest navigating to each of those locations in the Finder (specifically LaunchAgents and LaunchDaemons) and dragging each file containing the name "mcafee" to the Trash.

Do not place general reliance on that technique. I can provide no assurance that all its files can be identified by that name, nor can I guarantee the absence of other system alterations caused by it.

Back up your Mac prior to making any changes.

Create a Time Machine backup first, then you have some options.

That assumes you have material on that Mac you want to keep. If you don't, then it doesn't matter.

I have certain folders that I want to copy to a flash drive, they're full of my projects but that's it the applications i can install again and configure them again. But would that fix that catastrophic mess, and completely get rid of all traces of "McAfee" and similar "garbage" software?

Yes it would. Time Machine is only one option; Apple describes some others here, under "alternative options":

To erase your Mac and reinstall OS X please read How to reinstall OS X - Apple Support.

I think it's overkill for what you want do to, but as long as you have a backup of your important files you can explore those options.

Yeah, I agree with, but this is the only way to be sure that it's all gone, And since my Mac is relatively new.. it's still a viable option. but i've ordered a WD passport external harddrive for mac, So i'll hold off till I get that... what does the Time Machine backup exactly? files i.e music, video... Applications... or does it also back up system files?

... what does the Time Machine backup exactly? files i.e music, video... Applications... or does it also back up system files?

    Everything.

If you were restore a system from a Time Machine backup, the first thing it does is erase everything, leaving nothing. Then, it restores the entire system from the backup.

You can choose to restore from any number of complete backups. If the backup drive is large enough, you can restore a system from a particular date years ago. For example, if I wanted to restore a Mac to the exact condition that existed on October 9, 2011, with all the files it contained including the operating system it was running at the time (Lion, probably), I could.

If you want to exclude specific folders or volumes from being backed up, you can do that too.

Yes. Here is the basic procedure to follow, after creating the Time Machine backup.

    • To erase and install OS X read How to reinstall OS X on your Mac.
      • Follow the instructions in that document under Erase your drive and install OS X.
      • Then, follow the procedure in Move your content to a new Mac.
      • When asked how you want to transfer your information, select Transfer from a Mac, Time Machine backup, or startup disk.
      • Under Select the Information to Transfer, select only your previous User account and do not select "Applications", "Computer and Network Settings" or "Other files and folders". De-select those choices.
    • Subsequent to using Setup Assistant, you will need to reinstall the essential software you may require, once again remembering to install software only from their original sources, and omitting all non-essential software.
    • "Non-essential software" is a broad category that includes but is not limited to third party "cleaning", "maintenance", and "anti-virus" products.

This would be a better method than the one that I proposed, and will get rid of all McAfee associated files?

Sorry I'm being such a pain, been using windows and pc's all my life, so I know nothing about Mac's and best practises.

What you proposed is perfectly OK. The fundamental requirement is is to erase all "McAfee" related files and system modifications.

been using windows and pc's all my life

That explains it. Recovering Windows users usually react in stunned disbelief when they learn a Mac does not require the constant pampering necessary for Windows PCs.

Installing PC-style "cleaning" / "anti-virus" / "maintenance" utilities on a Mac will only cause trouble. "McAfee" is only one example of ill-conceived, worthless trash that should never be installed on Macs. There are plenty of other examples. The overwhelming majority of Mac problems reported on this site are directly attributable to using such things.

All that's needed for a Mac to work is for you to let it work.
