Safari lost network connection

for about a month now my Safari has been not working correctly and seems to be getting worse. I continually receive a message stating "safari cannot open the page because the network connection was lost" when going to websites I have been visiting for many years. I can use Opera, Puffin browsers no problem but really want to use Safari. I have reset the network settings, cleared all browsing files and still have the issue. I noticed that there is never an update from the app store for Safari as any other apps I have seen. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
