How to tell if your iPhone is charging

My iPhone 5s has got kind of temperamental, and I have to jiggle the cable around a bit before it'll charge sometimes. Normally that's fine, 'cause you just look for the lightning icon next to the charge indicator.

On this occasion, the phone has died completely, and now I can't tell which of the cryptic symbols on the screen is telling me it's charging, and which is telling me it needs to be plugged in.

Sometimes I have an empty battery icon with red low power, and sometimes I have the same, only with an icon of a lightning connector at the bottom of the screen.

Which is which?

I agree, it's the other way around (at least on iPhone 6, iOS 10). logo with cable means "not charging", logo without cable means "charging".. I lost many hours to this, thought my phone was dead when in reality I was wrongly assuming it was charging because I saw the logo with cable.. thanks!
