If you provide the model number of your MacBook Pro we can help answer your question(s). There are a number of Retina models, starting with a mid-2012 model.

You have a 13-inch, Mid-2011 MacBook Pro. The battery is not removable.

Not sure if that was ever the case, as we are all Apple product users like you ... so what information we can provide is whatever we can find as well. However, we are all glad to help with what we know.

    Thanks for the model number.

Unfortunately, as it turns out there were a number of A1278 models:

    • MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2009) / Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,5 / Order Number: MB990LL/A or MB991LL/A
    • MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010) /  Model Identifier: MacBookPro7,1 / Order Number: MC374LL/A or MC375LL/A
    • MacBook Pro (13-inch, Early 2011) / Model Identifier: MacBookPro8,1 / Order Number: MC700LL/A or MC724LL/A
    • MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2011) / Model Identifier: MacBookPro8,1 / Order Number: MD313LL/A or MD314LL/A
    • MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012) / Model Identifier: MacBookPro9,2 / Order Number: MD101LL/A or MD102LL/A

You can find the Model Identifier, as follows:

    • Click on the Apple logo on the left side of the OS X menu bar.
    • Select "About This Mac."
    • Select "System Report..."
    • Under "Hardware Overview" you should find the Model Identifier.

Please provide that identifier and I can provide more details about your Mac.

They posted their serial number which revealed it was a Mid 2011 as I mentioned earlier.

Thank you very much. I have followed all the SMC instructions to no avail. I guess I'll have to take it in.

I can't get the model identifier since it won't turn on.

However, I do have another MacBook Pro that was purchased around the same time. I'd love to have more info about it. It's model identifier is MacBook Pro9,2

    Thanks.
