Hi, Slippomotamus!
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. After reading your post, I see that you have a third party display that you are attempting to use with your MacBook Pro, but are not successfully getting them connected. I know how convenient having an external monitor can be, and want to help make sure that you can get yours working!
First, unplug your monitor then restart your Mac by selecting the Apple menu in the upper left of your display and choosing Restart from the drop down menu. After the computer boots back up, connect your monitor and try again. Make sure all cables are plugged in securely to the monitor, computer, and power source. You can reference the following article for more information on connecting your display.

If you still are having trouble getting the monitor and computer to communicate, try resetting the Mac's NVRAM. Information on the NVRAM and instructions for resetting it can be found in the article linked below.
How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac
After the reset is complete, try your monitor again. If it still will not connect, try resetting the System Management Controller (or SMC). More information on the SMC, and how to reset it, can be found in the following article.

I would also suggest ensuring you have the latest OS X version installed on your Mac. You can get instructions on updating your OS X software in the article below.

Hi Lindsay, no luck.
I finally got around to trying all the suggestions you made, twice actually, and problem persists. After restarting my Mac and clicking "detect monitors", there is a brief moment where the screen goes black and my monitor exits stand-by, but then it returns to "no signal" and my Mac doesn't show any more signs of recognition. I talked to Bell about the HDMI cable, they only said if it's not working to try another one. I guess I might just have to. I wonder if the problem lies somewhere within some default setting in my OS? Thanks Lindsay for your attempts to help.
