Aug 30, 2016 5:40 PM in response to Carolyn Samitby scofi,Disk mode did not work. I got the Apple logo but when I held down the play/pause and center button, it went back to the red X. iTunes is top-to-date but does not recognize the iPad when connected.

Aug 30, 2016 5:57 PM in response to scofiby Kenichi Watanabe,If the iPod won't get passed the "red X" when doing Reset or Disk Mode, the most likely cause is a faulty hard drive in the iPod. Most broken iPods (with hard drive for storage) are broken because of the hard drive.
NOTE: If the hard drive is faulty, there are now more options for replacing it, such as using commonly available flash-based storage in the form of compact flash card or SD card (on an adapter). This web site has relevant information
