I have an IMac running on 10.11.6 El Capitan. My bluetooth tracking pad has a mind of its own - opening windows and highlighting/deleting text.  On top of that my screen keeps freezing and the spinning ball appears - i have to keep pressing button on back of screen to force it to shut down .  This 2 line message has taken nearly an hour to type as i have no control over the track pad.

    Hello Kluggerjo,

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Community. I know how important it is to be able to rely on your devices working as expected, and I have a few steps that should help resolve the behaviors you are seeing.

I'd recommend starting by resetting your System Management Controller (SMC). The SMC helps control and regulate the different hardware systems on your Mac including Bluetooth.  This article will walk you through that process:  Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac

If you still encounter the problem after the test, you may want to test the behavior in a test user. This will help us determine if the issue is system-wide or isolated to your user account. This article will guide you through that process: How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

If the behavior is duplicated in the test user, I would recommend reinstalling El Capitan. This will not delete any of your data. To reinstall using recovery mode, have a look at this article : How to reinstall OS X

If you run into any trouble or have any questions, please let us know. The entire community is here to help.
    -Best Regards
