Q: Slow WiFi speeds with new Time Capsule

I've just had a complete refresh of all my equipment at home. A few months ago I bought a new 27-inch 5k iMac and its been running great. I've had an old (circa 2008) Time Machine running fine to provide internet connectivity, over WiFi.

With a 150MB fibre line into the house, I was getting about 50MB download speed over the WiFi to my iMac which is two rooms away from the Time Machine.

Last night I upgraded my line to a 200MB fibre line into the house and that boosted the download speed to the iMac, over WiFi, to about 75MB.

This morning I setup a brand new Time Capsule (2TB), in the same location as the old Time Machine, and now the download speed has dropped right off and I'm only getting 2-3MB download at best. I've been monitoring the speed and checking it throughout the morning (8am, 9am, 10am, 11am, 12noon) but seen no improvement. I have been benchmarking it against the speed I'm getting over WiFi from my iPhone, sat right next to the computer, and the iPhone is getting 30MB+

Any ideas what I can do to regain some of the speed and get back to similar levels I was getting? whats changed (apart from the Time Capsule, obviously)?

When you replaced the TC, did you use the airport utility in the Mac to configure the new TC to replace the old one? Or did you do a completely new setup?

If you still have the old TC available and can switch around .. I would like to see the actual numbers in a few screenshots.

You can do this from the wireless diagnostic app in your computer..

Hold down the option key and click the wireless fan in the top menu area. The details are already in that screenshot.. So you can see mine.. but you can also open the Wireless Diagnostics.

You can run the diagnostics although it seldom comes up with great revelations.. more important are the tools.

Open scan and that will give you a heap of info about the wireless environment.

Now what I would suggest is you check operation with the old TC and then compare it to the new one.

If you also post a couple of screenshots from the airport utility showing the setup.. we can perhaps recommend some fixes.
