Q: iPod Shuffle charges/is recognized but won't play

My iPod shuffle (4th gen) will show up and charge when it's plugged into iTunes, but then when it's disconnected it won't play through any headphones. It's fully charged, and I've tried the reset with no success. A hard restore apparently isn't an option as I get an Error 1400 message that basically an error has occurred. Anyone have any thoughts as to why this might be going on?

Thanks!

Is this a new shuffle you are using for the first time?  If so, when you connect the headphones, make sure the plug is fully inserted into the shuffle's headphones jack.  It should click into place.  The fit may be tighter than expected, especially when new.

For the error message when trying to do a Restore, is the computer that runs iTunes a Mac or Windows PC?  If Windows, which release?  Are you using the latest (current) version of iTunes?

It's not new - the headphones were definitely fully inserted, and a number of different headphone models were tried. The computer is a mac, and running the current version of iTunes.

When you move the power switch from OFF to ON (with shuffle disconnected and headphones plugged in), watch the shuffle's light (next to headphones jack).  Does it come ON briefly to indicate battery charge level.  If it does, what's the color?

For the Restore, shut down (power off) the Mac and disconnect all USB devices.  You can leave standard USB keyboard/mouse connected, if used.  If it's a MacBook, connect its power adapter so it's not running on battery power.  Move shuffle's power switch to OFF.  Start up the Mac, run iTunes, and connect shuffle to a direct USB port on the Mac, by itself.  Immediately try doing a Restore again.
