Q: Audio source randomly changes when in Carplay mode?

First, I don't think this is a Hyundai issue per se, but just wondering if anyone else can dupe this, or has seen/heard of it.

Second: I had something similar with my old head unit.

Scenario:

iPhone 6s, next to latest iOS update (I don't have the one they released like 2 days ago). Connect iPhone to Pioneer 4000 NEX head unit with iBolt docking cradle and lightning-USB cable. Head Unit detects carplay and Phone switches to Carplay mode. Access Carplay (doesn't matter how, button, Siri, etc.) Listen to Music or iHeart Radio.

Now, switch the head unit "source" to say, XM radio.

What happens: Randomly the head unit switches BACK to the USB/carplay interface.  Or more accurately "something" is telling it to switch back.

At first I thought it was my Pioneer Head unit freaking out.

Scenario now:

Same iPhone 6s and iOS. Using the Amazon Basics lighting to USB cable this time, connected to 2017 Hyundai SFS with supposedly the latest firmware/whatever. You plug the phone in, and phone and Head Unit detect carplay. Do the same: Play music, or iheart Radio. Then switch (I think the "mode" button) to radio (FM/XM). Randomly, in the middle of things, it switches to Carplay.

In either case, if you do not access Carplay (ie, you plug phone in and it detect carplay, but you don't actually DO anything), you can switch to XM/Radio and things are fine. Never once kicks over to Carplay.

I googled and the closest I could find was a thread (maybe on Apple?) where people had this Ovana or something VPN thingy installed and that's what was making the phone switch. In this case, no VPN.

Has anyone else ever seen this? It's very annoying.

The probability of two diff. USB cables being at fault seems highly unlikely.  I'd *maybe* suspect the lightning port on the iPhone, but if I stay in Carplay mode (ie:  actively listening to music or iHeart radio) it's fine.

Oh, and why is there no Carplay forum?  or Carplay category?

    Hello mjonis,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities. I know having an issue with your car stereo and CarPlay is not what you expect. The good news is the following article has a “Get Help” section that will be helpful in troubleshooting and resolve your issue with unexpected behavior with your car stereo and CarPlay:

Set up CarPlay to use with your iPhone

    Cheers!

Hello, thank you for the reply.

I was testing last night, and it seemed to be almost "consistent" within 2-3 minutes (I didn't have a stop watch, so had to rely on the time on the radio) that it would keep switching.

I did update to iOS 9.3.5 last night, and so far so good, but we'll see how it behaves on the ride home.

It's not that the phone isn't switching into Carplay (the "carplay" icon/whatever shows up on the phone and the head unit), it's that once you're doing "something" in Carplay and change the stereo input source to something else (FM, XM radio), that it seems that the phone sends a signal to the head unit after 2-3 minutes that you want to do something "carplay" again.

But hopefully it's fixed in this iOS update.

OK, so I've found the issue.

After iOS 9.3.5, I can only duplicate this if I use the iHeart Radio app (not the iHeart Auto app, the iHeart Radio app).  Steps to duplicate:

    1)  Turn car on

    2)  Wait for head unit (Pioneer or Hyundai) to power up

    3)  Connect iPhone with lightning to USB cable and wait for Carplay mode to be acknowledged.

    4)  Via Siri or Carplay button, start the iHeart Radio app and listen to something.

    5)  Use the head unit or steering wheel controls to change input (say, to FM, or AM, or XM).

    6)  Approx. 3 minutes later, the head unit will switch back to either USB/iPod (if Pioneer) or Carplay (if Hyundai) and play the iHeart Radio station.

Otherwise, if you use something OTHER than iHeart radio (Music--your music stored on your iPhone) then all is well now.

    Steps to remedy:

If you know you're going to switch sources, change Carplay from playing iHeart Radio to something else (say, Music).  THEN you can change audio sources and all is fine.

Not sure how to contact the iHeart Radio folks, but their Carplay implementation is obviously different from any other Carplay app I've used so far, and there's "something" in it that causes a signal to be sent every 3 minutes to switch back to Carplay.
