Q: Cracked screen and black strip vertically

I removed the screen on my iMac 27 5k because there was a noise that I thought came from the cooling fan. I cleaned it and the issue was resolved but once I put it back the screen had a 3/4"(18mm) wide black strip going from top to bottom. I opened it again thinking that I could be a piece of dust caught in the connector that kept that area from displaying. I cleaned the connector as best as I could but the full black strip -as black as the surrounding bezel- remained. Luckily is way to the left about 4" from the right edge. After about a week I found the screen had overnight fallen off and therefore the crack I mentioned. This crack, again luckily its only on the top right corner and covers about a 4 inch sq. area without damage to the image area. Unfortunately I used a no-name replacement set of glue strips. Maybe that's what caused the thing "coming unglued" or I didn't clean the old remaining tape well enough.

Any thoughts on what might have caused the black strip? Thanks

Can't really help you other than to suggest taking the computer to your local AASP to be properly diagnosed and repaired. Sometimes do-it-yourself fixes end up costing more due to the fixer simply not having the knowledge, skill or tools.

    Good luck.
