Distnoted runs amok

I can't find a good answer to this, but the distnoted process freezes up my Macbook (now happening on my Mac) several times a day. There is no rhyme or reason to when it happens. I've found that if I highlight "distnoted" in the Activity Monitor I'm able to "force quit" and the computer is back to normal. One solution I've found runs a macro to do this automatically (something I have no idea how to do!)

Why is this happening and can I stop it?
