Can'y sync with AppleTV

I have a Gen 1 AppleTV that I am unable to sync with iTunes on a iMac desktop. Had similar problem last year, but it finally synced after 4 hours.

The Apple TV is on the same wireless network as the iMac. The iMac has 10.10.5 and the latest iTunes. The TV never shows up in the device list in iTunes, and in Preferences, it shows it as Syncing for the past two days. The AppleTV icon never shows up in iTunes either.

I'm trying to share a folder of pictures on the iMac that I want to use for the AppleTV screen saver slide show. In "My Photos" the folder I want.

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)
