Q: Time Machine conflict with NBN in Australia

G'day! I live in Brisbane , Queensland, Australia where the National Broadband Network (NBN), which is Wi-Fi,  has been rolled out for everyone in the country.  We got attached to it three weeks ago.  The trouble is that creates a conflict with the Wi-Fi network I set up at home using my Time Machine.  As soon as I disconnect my Time Machine, everything works fine, except that I then cannot back up my files to Time Machine.  Connect the Time Machine and it kills my internet connection.  I would be really grateful if someone who lives in Australia and has encountered this problem could give me some advice as to how to resolve this conflict so that I can still use my Time Machine to back up my files.

Thank you in advance for your kind help.

Mac mini, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), Time Machine was bought late 2011

Hi.. I am in Melbourne. Not on NBN at all.. but a long long history of fixing Time Capsule problems.

(Minor btw.. common problem is mixing up Time Machine.. TM and Time Capsule.. TC. So lets keep them separate.

TM is software for backup on your computer.. TC is a router with a hard disk in it.. that is a possible target for TM backups but otherwise unrelated).

Whenever you change over ISP you must reset the Time Capsule to factory.

So please follow these instructions which is my standard set for this issue.

    Factory reset universal

Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.

N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.

    Setup the TC again.

Then redo the setup from the computer you want to use for TM using Airport Utility.

    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.

eg TCgen5 for basestation and TCwifi wireless name.

If the wireless is still a problem set wireless names like TC24ghz and set the 5ghz to different name.. eg.TC5ghz

    2. Use all passwords that also comply with 1. but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.

**3. If the TC is main router you can skip this point. This is only an issue when the TC is bridged.

Ensure the TC always takes the same IP address.. you will need to do this on the main router using dhcp reservation.. or a bit more complex setup using static IP in the TC.

Ignore this point if you don't understand it .. post back if you have drop out issues.

    4. Make sure IPv6 is set correctly in the computer. ie link-local only for ethernet and/or wireless depending on which you use. Auto is not good enough.

Plug WAN port of the TC.. (one closest to the USB marked with sunburst symbol) to the WiFi modem router you were supplied by the ISP. Make and model of this modem can be a help if you continue to have trouble..

The TC should be in bridge mode and it MUST create a wireless network. You do not need to do anything to the NBN modem router.

You can then select the TC wifi instead of the NBN modem and it will allow both internet connection and backup.

If you run into trouble, please post a screenshot from the Airport Utility in your computer of the TC setup.. if this is difficult try using airport utility on ipad or iphone as it works much better than the Mac version.
