Q: How can I transfer pics stored in iPhoto on an old MacBook to the Photo app on an iMac running El Capitan

I have around 1600 old pics stored in iPhoto on my older MacBook. How can I transfer the old pics to the Photo app on an iMac running OSX El Capitan?

Drag the library through File Sharing over a network, or an external drive which contains a partition or disk image formatted as Mac OS Extended, launch Photos with the Option key held down, click on Other Library, and choose it. You may be told to upgrade the library; if needed, the upgrader is available on Apple's Support website.

Connect the two systems together or use an EHD formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and move the library from the old system to the new system

If the old library was created by iPhoto '08 or earlier (version 7.x.x or earlier) download and run the iPhoto library upgrader - Using the iPhoto Library Upgrader tool - Apple Support

Then drag the old library to the Photos icon in the Dock to migrate it to Photos
