Q: can I upgrade mac mini 1.83 Ghz 2.1 to 4 GB RAM ?

hi,

This is the question : can I just take off the the two Gb of RAM installed in my mac mini 1.83 and put two modules of 2GB each and get 4 GB of RAM.

Macmini 2,1

Intel Core 2 Duo 1,83 GHz

ROM : MM21.009A.B00

SMC  : 1.19f2

Well, some say it will not recognize 4GB but only 3GB, if it's what will hapen, then I better install 2 GB and 1 GB

what about the BANK distribution bank 0 and bank 1 ?

thanks for your help

Maximum Memory3.0 GB (Actual) 2.0 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots2 - 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM

You can install two 2GB modules, but the system will only recognize 3GB for the user. You can also install one 2GB module and one 1GB module.

OK, that's what I read too. Now what about booting Snow Leopard in 64-bit mode, is it a cleaver solution or useless ?

You have a model that does not run 64-bit if I remember correctly. You can run Snow Leopard but it won't run in 64-bit mode. Cleavers won't help other than to require you buy a newer computer.

This says your Mini can't boot 64 bit:

    http://www.everymac.com/mac-answers/snow-leopard-mac-os-x-faq/mac-os-x-snow-leop ard-64-bit-macs-64-bit-efi-boot-in-64-bi…

Mac mini "Core 2 Duo" 1.83

    64

    64

    32*

    * These models are believed to be hardware capable of booting MacOS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard" in 64-bit mode, but it appears that they have been blocked in EFI from doing so. Unauthorized hacks are available.

To determine if your particular Mac has a 32-bit or 64-bit processor, 32-bit or 64-bit EFI, and whether or not your Mac is set to boot/running in 32-bit or 64-bit mode, an easy way is to download Startup Mode Selector. thanks guys for your the good advice, I have just made the upgrade few minutes ago with two different RAM modules.

1 Go in Bank 0 and 2 Go in Bank 1. The info system gives 3Go in total. My only question at the moment is the Bank selection, is it the right way what I did or shall I invert it for better performance.

Of course I saw the Kernel Startup Mode Selector, but I don't feel ready for it at this time.

There is also a CPU upgrade for this mac, do you think it worth it ?

Which memory module is in which slot should not make a difference.

The CPU upgrade would only be worthwhile if you can t the replacement CPU at very little cost and you like doing things like replacing the CPU

ya, you're right about the CPU replacement, regarding the ram, i inverted their emplacement, for no serious raison I should confess.

Any how, I am facing another problem that I have to solve. I want to assign this machine to Mac and Windows.

So I have this 80 Go drive with Boot Camp installed ( 60 Go for OS X and 20 Go for windows)

So, instead of installing a new system i want to transfer my installation to a bigger drive, maybe SSD drive.

I have done this before with super duper but only for exact sizes. I am afraid of shrinking the final drive.
