Q: My photo library spontaneously lost about 1,000 photos

I had about 1,500 pics in my photo library yesterday. I opened Photos today to see that now I apparently only have 546. Settings still shows my photo library taking up the same amount of space, yet 1,000 of my treasured photos (including vacations and family outings) are missing. The photos left date back from now to June, then spontaneously jump to March, then two photos it says are from 2004 and 2006 that I only took last year. Any help?

iPhone 5s, iOS 9.3.5, 16 GB.

What version of the OS adn of iPhoto do you have? what has changed since it worked? If you hold down teh option key while launching iPhoto do you have multiple libraries? If so test each one

    I opened Photos today

Are you using Photos or iPhoto?  It is not clear, because you are asking the question in the iPhoto forum, but are writing "Phtotos".

Sometimes photos will vanish from a Mac, if you are using iCloud Photo Library or My Photo Stream.  Are you syncing your libraries on your iPhone 5s and your Mac using iCloud? If iCloud Photo Library is enabled on your iPhone and your Mac and you deleted photos from your iPhone, the photos will have been deleted from the Mac too.

If you are using Photos for Mac, check the "Recently Deleted" album, if your photos are still there.
