Q: Macbook freezes when editing in FCPX (spinning wheel and audio playback goes on - kernel panic? Log provided)

Hello everyone,

For quite a while now my MacBook freezes while editing in FCPX with the wheel starting to spin and there is no reaction to any inputs anymore. I can move the spinning-wheel-mouse-cursor but no keystrokes are recognized. And when it freezes while playing back, the audio just keeps on playing.

I am running FCPX on a MacBook Pro 15 (2,5 GHz i7, 16GB RAM, Radeon R9 M370X 2048 MB) with El Capitan (latest updates installed). It does not matter whether I edit on my internal or external drive. :/ I used to edit 4K footage coming from a Panasonic Lumix G7. I turned background rendering on and while it works, the editing is absolutely smooth and flawless.

I also tried reinstalling FCPX and also using a Guest account. No change.

Here is my error log: http://pastebin.com/raw/msWmvXQV

The freeze happened with the clock showing 17:56.

I assume at this point there is a kernel panic?

Any help is appreciated. It's very frustrating as I just switched from Premiere to FCPX and I really started to love it so much more than Premiere Pro.

Kind regards,

Martin

Something is causing the GPU to crash.

Do you have any third party plugins installed?

I used to use Color Finale but when I reinstalled FCPX I uninstalled it and tried FCPX again in clean state. So it also crashed without any Plugin installed.

I would not suspect Color Finale, which is very well regarded among the pros.

I haven't heard of specific problems related to this GPU. I hope that other people using the same mac can chime in.

In the past there have been bugs in GPU code that manifested in some high-end machines at the time, but if this were the case I would have expected a lot of complaints.

Might be some other software causing a conflict?

The "FCPX LUT loader" Plugin was still installed as it was in /Library/Plug-Ins instead of the Motion Templates/Effects folder. I deleted any remains.

I will test FCPX for a while without any plugins and report back.

But there still are some 'strange' things in my console.

But despite these error messages the program itself runs absolute flawlessly. No stuttering, no lags, nothing. I hope the FCPX LUT Loader was the problem. I'll keep you updated.

    Here are some crashReports:

    gpuRestart (FCPX)

    gpuRestart

Do you think it's a hardware failure?

The next step would be reinstalling OSX and then first install FCPX before any other apps. Can you read anything of the logs?

Sorry, I cannot see anything in the logs beside the obvious: it is a GPU problem.

Reinstalling only OS X and FCP X is a good idea.

If it does not crash, then gradually bring back other software and test as you go.

If it still crashes just with OS X and FCP X, I would suspect of a hardware problem. It could still be a bug in FCP X's GPU code, but if that were the case I would expect more people to complain - even if the bug manifested only on your model, it'd be bound affect more users, and at least I haven't heard of a similar issue.

I contacted the Apple support and a case was opened. The next step is to recover Mac OS X with the data being kept. Instead I'm going to completely clean install Mac OS and like I said, install FCPX only trying to install the other software step after step when there is no crash.

Unfortunately (?) the remote system diagnosis brought no results. Im just afraid of the situation that it obviously is a hardware defect and the diagnosis shows nothing and the technicians won't do anything about it. :/

i highly doubt that FCPX is buggy.

THanks for your replies, I really appreciate it!

You might try a hardware test at the Apple Store.

So I just reinstalled Mac OS (clean install) and only installed FCPX, nothing else. After about 10mins it crashed again. :/

I think it is most likely to be a hardware problem.

Do you know any stress tests for the GPU? I would like to provoke the kernel panic without FCPX so I can show that it's clearly not FCPX related. :/

I'm not quite sure where to reply here.

I've been running a GPU Stress Test (OpenGL) for about 2 hours and will have it run until tomorrow and it does not seem like there will be a freeze which is strange because FCPX does not freeze when it's struggling but random like when color grading. When I switch back to Yosemite or try the Sierra Beta and there are no crashes - what would that mean? :/

I just had MemtestCL running on bootcamp and it gave me "random block errors". I did the same test on my wife's Macbook and our iMac 27 and in both cases there were 0 errors.

But well, it's running on Windows bootcamp, no warrant I guess...
