Apple has released a universal Mac OS 9.2.2 install for free!

Just found out about this, very cool...been here for quite a while too...go here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120243#English ...that is a MacOS 9 netboot image...download it...double click the NetBoot.dmg image so it mounts, go into the mounted image, go into the English folder, you should see a NetBoot.pkg file, right click and choose view contents, then open the Contents folder, copy the NetBoot.pax.tz (or similar file, don't remember the exact file name now but it should at least be similar) to somewhere like your desktop...double click that archive and wait for it to extract its contents...you should now have a NetBoot folder on your desktop...open it...you should now have a NetBoot HD.img and a empty (what's that for?) Applications.img...double click to mount the NetBoot HD.img image and tada, you should now see what is a complete universal install of MacOS 9.2.2...freely downloadable from none other then Apple themselves...:D

The download is designed for use under OSX; the file format it arrives in, a .dmg disk image file, is a direct indication of that. None of the standard Apple Disk Copy versions that come with any version of OS 9 can open/mount such a file format. In order to use a .dmg disk image file in OS 9, Disk Copy 6.4 or later must be used.

Not sure which of the other interior file formats, such as a .pkg one or a .pax.tz one, are usable in OS 9.

As this download is, according to the page, taken directly from the OS X 10.2 Server package, I'd say that that's a given.

Ah. Thanks. I'd had that once, don't know where I put it.

btw, do note that I myself have tried burning the System Folder to a CD but have been unable to get it to boot of the cd...maybe it'll only boot from the HD, dunno didn't try...although it is curious...when you look at some system files like Panel and Login in the system folder the description of them is different (System Manager I believe it said instead of the default Mac OS 9.2 description) then what I've seen on a normal OS 9 install I have...makes me wonder if unfortunately this system is configured such that it'll only boot from a netboot server....but if anyone gets this system to boot please post how 🙂
