Q: Why can't I select which music to sync on my iPod nano?
I have a rather old nano and the most recent version of iTunes. I've read other responses to similar questions, but my problem hasn't been solved. When I try to edit my iPod content (go to File>Devices>Sync), there's no way for me to select what I want to sync to the iPod like there used to be (checking boxes and the like); it just starts "syncing," which is not helpful because what I want to do is change what's on there. (Also, as a side note, every time I do this the Photos application opens...why???)
What am I missing? Am I just doomed to listening to the same songs on my iPod forever?

For current iTunes, the screenshot below shows the upper left corner of my iTunes window.
When your iPod is connected, and recognized by iTunes, its device button appears (circled in red above). Click that device button to show the iPod's Summary settings screen. The other settings screens are accessed from the sidebar along left side of window (under the name and tiny image of iPod). For example, to set up syncing for Music, in the sidebar, under Settings, click Music.
Also, as a side note, every time I do this the Photos application opens...why???
You must have a 5th gen iPod nano (the one with a video camera). Open Photos, and click through the initial setup screen to get to the main window. Along the top, if you see a checkbox that says something like Open Photos for this device, with your iPod nano identified, uncheck that box. Close Photos. It should not open anymore when you connect your iPod.
