iCloud music library keeps trying to update, even though it's turned off...

This is driving me nuts.

I tried Apple Music, and so tried the iCloud Music Library. Both turned out to not be what I wanted, so I cancelled my subscription and turned them off - I've got about a fortnight left on my free trial and then it won't renew.

However, in Preferences on my Mac, even though I've turned off Show Apple Music and Use iCloud Music Library, and Genius is turned off too, iCloud Music Library keeps trying to update, and so it appears in the downloads window in the top right corner of iTunes. I click on the cross to cancel this, it cancels, and then I get a popup saying "Deleting Genius results." But Genius is off. And so is iCloud Music Library.

This happens at launch, but also happens when I try to rent a movie - and it actually stops the rental going through, unless I retry the rental up to three times, going back to the search page, finding the movie again, and trying to rent again...

Does anyone have any idea how to fix this?

With iTunes closed delete the Downloads folder inside iTunes Media in case you have something in there triggering downloads.

Try Fix unexpected quits or launch issues in iTunes for Windows - Apple Support. Perhaps opening in iTunes' own safe mode might help.

You could also try disconnecting the computer from the network while you open and close iTunes so that it cannot connect at launch. You might then be able to change the settings and have it stick.
