Q: FYI: Security update 2016-001 and Pages '09

If you are running OS X 10.11.6 on older hardware (e.g. mid-2011 macmini), the above mentioned security update may cause Pages '09 v4.3 to show a black screen when opening RTF, Pages, or Word documents. Other observations:

  • Autosave will quickly update your file icon to show all black. These documents will open in Pages v5.6.2 normally.
  • Switching to layout mode will reveal a entirely blank document.
  • New Word Processing templates cannot receive text, or display a insertion beam.
  • Export to other formats still works.
  • No current fix for black screen

This occurs on my 2011 Mac mini, but does not occur on my 2014 MacBook Air. Depending on your hardware, this may or may not be a true end of life for Pages '09 v4.3.

This security update also causes scrolling text distortion that may appear as an area across a part of your document, and depending on your hardware vintage, even as a grayed out area of text. In my experience, this occurs in all text based applications, and Safari 9.1. Preview 8.1 can no longer scroll PDF by a scrolling motion with the Magic Mouse II, or a two-finger flick on the trackpad.

Update. More time to work on this issue. Fixed.

I performed a Safe Boot, and emptied the contents of my /Users/myname/Library/Caches folder. On reboot, I emptied the Trash, and Pages '09 v4.3 is working normally again on my trusty 2011 Mac mini.

If you encounter the black screen in Pages '09 v4.n, then the preceding paragraph is the apparent remedy for the collateral effect of the Security Update 2016-001 for OS X 10.11.6.
