Q: How stop automatic opening all unread mail

In 10.10.5 with mail 8.2 on a 27" iMac

when ever I OPEN Mail it automatically opens all the unread messages, some of which I would never open by choice

on this Mac that typically sits for several days without being used or opened.

Surely there must be some way to avoid that automatic opening  of  the messages????

I choose to decide WHICH ones to open.

HOW????

Mac OS X (10.4.11)

    I can't quite understand what you're asking.

When you say Mail 'automatically opens all the unread messages', do you mean that it opens a separate window for every message?

What about messages that you have already read? are they opened too?

Your description doesn't match my experience, so I'm trying to clarify what it is you're asking.

Instead of how Snow Leopard and all prior versions worked ( which presents a online per message list of all Unopened mails atop the total list of Opened emails.

instead of that Yosemite opens into a window that on connection automatically garners (gets) all unread messages and throws them in the open to read window INSTEAD OF LEAVING THEM UNOPENED

That means that any message I would choose to destroy without having been 'opened' does and cannot occur...which exposes the Mac in use to potential adverse materials IN the email.

Somehow, I hope to set Yosemite so it presents ONLY a list of unopened...so I have the choice to delete those I do not choose to open.

    HOW???

Do you have Classic checked under Preferences->Viewing?
