Is the EXACT model/year of your MBP a mid 2009 and what the current OSX?
Depending upon the circumstances, you may have to use the original installation disks in order to get you MBP running again.

Recovery mode is only available with OS X Lion (10.7) or later. So without knowing your machine specs, we don't know.
Thanks for replies - The mac is the older version with a disk drive and runs 10.5.8 and so I guess I will need the original disks .
