Shuffle memory

The summary page on my 2GB Shuffle shows 1.1GB of 'Other'. I cannot access any of that to find out what is there. I tried to do a reset to factory settings, but I am not allowed because another program is using files on the Shuffle. Can anyone give any insight? I am more than willing to go back to a completely empty device.

Thanks for any info anyone can provide.

You should be able to do a Restore using iTunes, and that's the appropriate action for the "Other" issue. Eject shuffle in iTunes and disconnect. Reconnect shuffle and immediately try the Restore again in iTunes.

If you get the same error message, try restarting your computer. Immediately after startup completes, run iTunes, connect the shuffle, and try the Restore again.

Do you have an anti-malware utility that runs in the background, to monitor mounted storage volumes? The shuffle's storage is seen as a mounted volume by Windows, if disk use is enabled. That may be the "another application" that is blocking the Restore. If you know of such a utility that you use, see if you can exclude the iPod's volume from being "protected" in this way. Or temporarily disable the utility. Then try doing a Restore.

Alternately, go to the shuffle's Summary settings screen in iTunes. If it is currently set to Manually manage music, uncheck that checkbox. Then also uncheck Enable disk use. And Apply. This will unmount the shuffle's volume when iTunes is not actively syncing to it. That may unblock whatever is causing the problem when you do the Restore.
