    4GB RAM is not realistically enough for 10.10 unless you like beachballs.

    That system will address 16GB, I suggest at the very least 8GB RAM

    Get rid of sophos, go to the website and get the directions. Sophos is the mac equivalent of eating a huge breakfast, mostly pancakes, and trying to jog 12 miles on a hot day in one of those space suits.

     

    consider an SSD, it will change that system dynamically

     

    boot into safe mode, and clear caches.

    Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up - Apple Support

     

    after that I'd get rid of a lot of you 3r party stuff to test and if no difference then put it back

    Google, Seagate, Spotify, this is all "fluff" you may not need it resident when you boot.
