We need to know more to understand why you cannot import from your iPhone. The document Carolyn linked to will help to show how to import, but not if there is an issue with the photo library on the iPhone.

What happens when you try? There may be several reasons if you cannot import.  Are you trying to import using a USB connection or from iCloud?

If you are trying to import using a USB connection:

    • Does Photos not open the Import panel, when you connect the  iPhone to the Mac? If yes, does iTunes show your iPhone, when you connect the iPhone?  Does Image Capture show the iPhone?
    • Or is the problem that Photos does not show all photos in the Import panel, just a random selection?
    • Or can you see the new photos in the import panel, but the import does not finish succesfully?

The most common reason recently for a failed import from the iPhone is, that iCloud Photo Library has been enabled on the iPhone. If iCloud Photo Library is active on the iPhone with optimize storage, the photos are in iCloud and not all are on the iPhone, only optimized smaller versions.  Then you have to use iCloud to import the photos, because the Mac cannot retrieve them from the iPhone, since they are not on the device.

I found a word around - my iPhone was plugged into the macbook - I was trying to transfer some photos to my desktop to use. I went to a preview window and imported the photo's rather than using the photo app. As i just kept saying no photos.

Then on my iPhone, i found out later that iPhoto is no longer supported by Apple. I imported all my photos to the new photo app and exported to my macbook.  Now just have to upload them all to iCloud or maybe they are there already? It's too bad and when changes come, Apple doesn't send us a message how to work  it or change it.

I got more storage on my iPhone now.
