Q: Usb trouble with El Capitan 10.11.6

Hey guys so I am new to mac, I currently have a macbook pro mid 2010. I have been getting no response from two of the usb ports since I got it from my cousin, he said they used to work but after updating software, they stopped, I am doing a lot of research online about this issue and saw that some people have found solutions via going into some registry looking place and adding 'kext' files i believe it is and some other stuff I know nothing about.

I am a pc technician, reason for getting a mac is to learn about it to get mac customers, I guess this is my first assignment, anywho can anyone please shed some suggestions on steps i should take to get on the path to getting my ports to start working please??

Depending on the age of the Mac, you should test the hardware first using either:

Using Apple Hardware Test - Apple Support

Using Apple Diagnostics - Apple Support

In addition, you can learn a lot about Mac troubleshooting by using the tool EtreCheck and learning where the various categories/directories referenced in the results are located:

    Using EtreCheck

Nearly all Mac problems can be solved or diagnosed by looking in a few locations on the Mac where background and system processes are initiated from.  When booting or user login occurs, the Mac (like other *NIX) systems checks several directories for configuration files (e.g. .plist, KEXT) and then runs those processes that are referenced as necessary.  Learning where these few directories are in System scope and User scope is the key to knowing how to for example manually remove malware/adware, or to solve the problem of a no longer compatible KEXT from a 3rd party software or device installed long ago.

Good luck.  If you need help with your existing used Mac from your cousin, post your EtreCheck results here and I'm sure someone will have a look and describe the issues seen and how you would address them.

There is nothing in the Etrecheck report worth mentioning. It appears the ports are registering in the System Information report. Did you run the test using the links FishingAddict provided?

I'm still doing research here on it, I saw some people tweaking their DSDT file and a plist file in AppleUSBEHCIPCI

    http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/306777-guide-usb-fix-el-capitan-1011/

I'm not gonna touch anything of course without learning more about whats going on but take a look at what i pulled up,

    my Mac identifier values

    Screen Shot 2016-09-04 at 9.43.58 AM.png

I did a search for EHC1 in DSDT and came up with 2 finds:

    Screen Shot 2016-09-04 at 9.47.27 AM.png

    and

    Screen Shot 2016-09-04 at 9.47.48 AM.png

I then did a search for EHC2 in the DSDT and came up with 3 finds:

    #1

    Screen Shot 2016-09-04 at 9.48.17 AM.png

    #2

    Screen Shot 2016-09-04 at 9.48.33 AM.png

    and #3

I do hope this is helpful in some way or the other.

Oh and Eric Root I saw that I may be able to burn my mac AHT to a cd and run it, I will report with what I get.
