Q: Where does Photos hide iPhoto places?

Finally took the plunge to El Capitan on a mid 2011 refurbished imac from my trusty old Snow Leopard on a 2008 iMac. Finding it really difficult to handle moving my carefully curated, multiple Iphoto libraries to Photos. For example, I can't figure out how to see all photo libraries nor how to see all photos taken in a specific place like I could with iPhoto places. How do I do either of those on Photos? Hoping FatCat's PowerPhoto helps. Also want to update my iphoto 09 with the latest offering in the Apple store but it won't let me because it was came bundled with my old iMac and was not a separate purchase. Arghh. Any clues?

select your image in photos, command i opens the info pane   to see location map.

option command s opens the sidebar.

Select Photos from the very top.  Use the <  along the top left to see"collections" < again to see "years"

With PowerPhotos you can view multiple libraries

Photos does not have the same location views as iPhoto - if you are in years view and if you have 7 or less countries represented in that year or in collection s view click on the > t the right of the title and a map will appear like the iPhoto places map

To see your libraries adn select one hold dow the option key while launching Photos (the same as iPhoto for this)

as to updating to iPhoto 9.6.1 see Can't Update iPhoto because it is not available in the App Store

The lower section of the Info panel will show a tiny map, if your photo has locations assigned. The map is basically a road map with not much geographic detail. The location of the photo will be marked with a pin and you can move this pin to change the location.

    For example:

    Screen Shot 2016-09-06 at 15.14.12GMT.png

The maps you are seeing, when you click the location names in the headings of the years or collection view will take you to a larger map, as Larry pointed out. These maps do not show pins, but stacked thumbnails of your photos.  You can click these thumbnails to see the photos sorted by location.

The next OS version to be released soon will have very different map features. If you are planning to upgrade to macOS Sierra this fall, I'd wait before you invest too much workinto the Places they are now.

    See the preview at:   http://www.apple.com/macos/sierra-preview/

    For example:

It is too late for you to upgrade your iPhoto '09, sorry.

The upgrade from iPhoto '09 to iPhoto '11, version 9.6.1 is a major upgrade not a simple update and requires a purchase of the new release.  But Apple stopped the development of iPhoto when Photos came out a year ago and is no longer selling it. Because iPhoto 9.6.1 is an App Store version that never has been sold outside the App Store, you cannot purchase it from resellers like Amazon either.
