Safari Beachball In Outlook.Com

For the last month or so, I have encountered some odd behavior. In Safari, I have some sites bookmarked such as Outlook.com, Yahoo.com, Amazon.com and some others. I can open Outlook.com and look at emails but without fail, I will at some point get the spinning beachball and need to close Safari. It doesn't seem to have any connection to any specific email because I can open an email once and everything is fine, but at some other time, opening that same email will lead to the spinning beachball. There are times I don't even open any email, but just sitting in Outlook.com and clicking on another bookmark will cause the beachball.

Where it gets interesting is if I don't open Outlook.com, I don't get the beachball. Since I am accessing the email via the Outlook.com website, there is no program to reinstall.

I also did a Hardware Test (holding down "D" while starting the computer) and there were errors, all 4MOT/4/40000003 HDD and ending with either -1230, -1233 and -1236. I don't think this is related to the Safari beachball problem as I would expect to see the beachball doing most anything, whether using online services or not. But I thought I would mention this for information purposes.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what I can do

What OS version are you using? You should be able to upgrade to El Capitan, which would give you the latest Safari version 10.0.3.

El Capitan

Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.

Also check to make sure there is a compatible driver for your printer.

Do a backup before installing, preferable 2 backups on 2 different drives.

My problem is similar in that every time I log into Outlook via Safari I now get the beachball of death spinning anytime I want to write a reply and then it becomes frozen and useless.

The only way to avoid this is to log in via Chrome. My Macbook pro is dated 2009, it won't let me upgrade to Sierra (despite having put in more Ram and changing to solid state drive) as it's says it's too old. Am I condemned to a life of Safari misery because of this?

Could anyone please offer solutions/fixes/advice?

thanks

Try running this program and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

I ran Entrecheck last week and have not used the Mac since then, so maybe this will help. I don't recall clicking any options so if I need to run it again, I will. I had disconnected the Passport backup drive thinking that might have been part of the problem but it had no effect.

I disabled the google updater by going into Terminal mode and typing "defaults write com.google.Keystone.Agent checkInterval 0". The spinning beachball continued after restarting Safari and even restarting the Mac. I thought about using Apple Mail to access my hotmail account rather than using Outlook.com, but when it started to synch with my hotmail account, I noticed there were 18,000 unread emails being synched which means far more read ones. Looking at my inbox, there are so many emails going back to 2008. I am still not convinced this is the problem and might just be a coincident the spinning beachball is occurring only after opening Outlook.com. But I am going to try and empty out the inbox and see if that does anything. Beyond that I am at a loss what else could be causing this.

Sep 8, 2016 6:54 AM in response to michael519

Part of the problem may be your browser is not up to date since you are using 10.7.

Safari/Preferences/Advanced - enable the Develop menu, then go there and Empty Caches. Quit/reopen Safari and test. Then try Safari/History/Show History and delete all history items. Quit/reopen Safari and test. You can also try try Safari/Reset Safari. The down side is it clears all cookies. Doing this may cause some sites to no longer recognize your computer as one that has visited the web site. In Finder hold down the option/alt key while selecting the Go menu item. Select Library. Then Library./Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db and move it to the trash.

Go to Safari Preferences/Extensions and turn all extensions off. Test. If okay, turn the extensions on one by one until you figure out what extension is causing the problem.

I also did a Hardware Test (holding down "D" while starting the computer) and there were errors, all 4MOT/4/40000003 HDD and ending with either -1230, -1233 and -1236.

That indicates the cooling fan that services the hard drive has failed or is failing. It's a problem that should be addressed but I agree it should not cause Safari to crash. Were the HD overheating badly I suspect the symptoms would be generously spread across all apps and the system functions.

Something about the WD Passport drive looks all wrong--too many partitions or something. Try dismounting and disconnecting the Passport temporarily then restart and test Safari on those sites. It's a long shot but doing that test wil lat least eliminate one variable.

Also test with the printer temporarily disconnected. Again, it reduces variables.

Your EC report is otherwise quite free of "the usual suspects"--adware, anti-virus apps, cleaning/tuneup apps, etc.

Nothing seems to be resolving the problem from the suggestions already made. It seems that the problem is not just limited to Outlook.com as Safari froze up even using Yahoo mail. Since the system is an iMac from mid 2011 and using OS X Mountain Lion 10.7.5, I was wondering if it pays to try and upgrade to El Capitan, if that would get a fresh Safari and clear out some of the things that might be causing the current problem. As long as the upgrade will retain our regular settings (Safari Bookmarks) and files and apps (we really don't use any non Apple apps other than Evernote), maybe it would be worth doing that and then if the problem persists, look deeper. At least we would have a more current OS. I've never done an in place upgrade so thus my hesitancy to rush into that for fear of losing bookmarks etc. Does an upgrade seem like a reasonable idea?

Sep 9, 2016 10:32 AM in response to michael519

You should keep what you have during an upgrade; however, Do a backup before installing, preferable 2 backups on 2 different drives.

Also check to make sure there is a compatible driver for your printer.

One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install the new OS, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. This partition will not contain your personal data. Do a backup before you do anything. By doing this, if you don’t like it you won’t have to go though the revert process.

Check to make sure your applications are compatible.

Application Compatibility

Applications Compatibility (2)

El Capitan 10.11 Compatibility information

Also check to make sure there is a compatible driver for your printer.

Open Disk Utility, select your hard drive (step 1), then the Partition tab (step 2), and select the partition. Using the /// at the bottom move it up (step 3) until the size box decrease by about 50 GB. Select the newly created space and hit the + button (step 4). Name it something and select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format (step 5). Then hit the Apply button(step 6). Download the installer from the App Store and when it starts, point it at the new partition. You might want to make a copy of the installer outside the Applications folder to avoid having to re-download it in the future. Once installed, restart with the option/alt key held down, select the new partition and reboot. Test away.

Before I embarked on an upgrade to El Capitan, I decided to try something first. I installed Mozilla Firefox and used that rather than open up Safari at all. Initially, it seemed to work very well. It started out a bit faster but lately seems to be slower. I see the spinning ball come and go but it never completely freezes a site and I am able to continue, something I was unable to do when using Safari. I notice that even working in Pages, that spinning beachball appears more often than I remember. Nothing freezes but it seems like the computer system is working harder in the background.

While this has stopped those Safari freezes, something is still going on in the background. I guess there still might be something going on related to that "4MOT/4/40000003 HDD" error but like Allan had said, if the system was overheating, it would be noticed more across the board. That still needs to be looked at by a hardware tech but now I am not sure if I should continue with the upgrade in case that spinning ball means something else is going on in the background that might persist in a new OS.

I'd get the computer checked before attempting any upgrade.
